In ancient times many funerary monuments were pre-carved with the heads left unfinished… until a client came along and bought the piece. Once the purchase had been made, the heads and faces would be finished to (hopefully) match the likeness of the deceased. In the case of this piece, the final step was never performed and what’s left is an eerie monument morning no one in particular.
